HISTORY

SYME was first started in South Korea by the Nicholes family. They saw the great demand for learning English in Asia but so many of the programs focused on test scores rather than ability to use English like a native speaker. Additionally, as Word of Life missionaries, they dreamed of a method to teach the Bible in a fun, enjoyable way to the different cultures around them. SYME Korea was a huge success so Word of Life sought to implement the program in it’s ministries world-wide. SYME Taiwan was launched in Taichung over ten years ago by Chris and Beth Steiner who had a strong desire to see Taiwanese people know God. Now there are several other SYME programs worldwide teaching students the Bible in english.

what we believe

Our faith is so important to us—without it, SYME would not exist and our work and very lives would be meaningless. While students are not required to agree with the entirety of the SYME theology, it is important to note that all of our teaching and ministry stems from those beliefs. We do, however, require students to be willing to participate in Bible Classes.

wHAT IS WORD OF LIFE?

Word of Life is a non-profit religious organization that seeks to create faith-defining experiences for students and families. This is done through camps, conferences, bible institutes, local church ministries, and SYME. While SYME is a huge ministry for Word of Life in Taiwan, it is only a small piece of a much larger ministry across the world.

The community aspect of SYME is one of the most valuable parts of our program; it provides students with a safe and healthy place to explore English and grow their faith. That’s why we live by a Standard of Conduct. Each day this standard serves to protect our community as we honor the Lord with our lives.
